Collins Barracks Open Day - 26th September
5th and 6th Class accepted an invitation from Collins Barracks to their Open Day today. At 9.30am we set off up the hill and took our time to enjoy the wonderful view of Cork City from Audley Place.
Arriving at the Barracks, we were allocated Gunner Cian O’Connell as our guide. He took us to see the Gym first where we saw army computer technology, a big gun, equipment soldiers carry, a motorbike and a field medic with medical aid equipment. Right beside that was a demonstration on fitness training – some of us did press-ups.
On our way to the Communications Department we met some Assistance Dogs in training.
In Communications they told us about walkie talkies they use for communicating at different distances. We got to ask a lot of questions about army life and emergency operations.
Then we visited the Army engineers who build bridges and do all kinds of interesting work.
Then Gunner O’Connell took us out to the Parade Ground where there were more things to visit.
Firstly we saw the bomb disposal team with a remote control robot for dealing with bombs. After that we got a chance to try the loading lever on a huge gun.
Finally we said goodbye and thank you!
