Frank Rodahan, from Bank of Ireland, whose daughter Ciara graduated from us and is currently in our secondary school, introduced us to the Bank of Ireland programme for 5th class - BizWorld. It is all about entrepreneurship and is delivered in one and a half days in our own classroom.
Fifth class took to it like ducks to water. In three teams, each group invented a product. Their ideas were ingenious: TechRax, Soleables and Swing Check were the three products. Each group developed, financed, managed and marketed their product.
The process included pitching to a potential investor in a 'dragon's den' type situation. The Financial Manager of each company had to negotiate terms with the investor who always seemed to want a very high percentage in return for his investment. However, 5th class clearly know how to drive a hard bargain. Our dragon was none other than the very gracious Cork Senior Football star Aidan Walsh.
Each group also devised a video advertisement for their product. This was scripted, rehearsed and then acted out.
The workshop leader was Annmarie Fewer from Bank of Ireland who did an absolutely wonderful job. She packed in so much into the day and a half that we didn't even notice it passing!
