Fifth Class were thrilled to take part in a ceramic sculpture class on Monday 23 April.
The class was conducted by ceramic sculptor, Liz Burgess. We spent two hours on Monday making our sculptures under Liz's direction. Our theme was the Skellig Islands. Liz showed us how to build up our sculptures from a flat background, how to make the sea and beehive huts of the the monks and those endless steps. The clay she brought us is wonderfully easy to use. She encouraged us to include clouds, birds, seals, whales, dolphins, fish and whatever else we wished. Those two hours passed like 5 minutes. We were all completely absorbed in our task and had no concept of time passing.
Liz took our pieces away to be fired in her kiln and we reconvened the following Monday to glaze.
That was just as much fun. Glaze colours do not always look like the colour they are going to be after firing. Again, one and a half hours passed far too quickly. And again, our pieces went away for firing.
They were ready the following Thursday and Fifth class were thrilled to pieces with the results. Each girl now has a beautiful clay sculpture to hang in her house forever!
