Lord Major Visit - 11th October 2018

We had a lovely visit from the Lord Mayor today.

Lord Mayor Mike Finn told us Cork is the only city where the Lord Mayor visits all the schools, 96 in total.

He told us how important it is to come to school everyday and to work hard to achieve your goals.

We were delighted to each be given a pencil with the words ‘I can’ emblazoned on it. The Lord Mayor explained ‘I can’ means all of these; I can do my best at school, I can talk to someone if I am worried about something, I can help out at home, I can come off the online game when I am asked.

The Lord Major showed us how to say ‘I can’ when he gave us a half day with no homework. We were very grateful.

The Lord Major asked us to be proud of our hometown – Cork. As it says on our new pencils “We are Cork”.

The Scoil Mhuire pupils were given the opportunity to ask questions. We found out there is a new Lord Mayor each year. Thus far there have only been 5 women Lord Mayors. Maybe one of the pupils listening today will be a future female Lord Mayor of Cork. We found out there has been a Lord Major for the last 231 years and the Lord Major’s chain was made in 1787. It has to be locked up every night because it is insured for 3million euros!
